Engineered for coastal exposure.

Port Shepstone and the Hibiscus Coast sit in one of South Africa’s more demanding coastal environments. Salt spray, persistent humidity and wind-driven rain all affect how a sliding door needs to be specified. Frame profile, finish, hardware and glass are not generic — they depend on how exposed the opening is and what the door is being asked to do. Our process starts with a site measure, then a written specification, so the system suits the property rather than a template. Fabrication happens in our Durban facility; installation is handled on site by our own teams.

Discuss Your Opening

Standard vs multi-track — what changes.

Two common approaches to sliding doors, and how the choice depends on the opening rather than preference.

Parameter Standard Residential System Multi-Track System
Track arrangement Typically two-track Two or three independent tracks
Panels that can stack to one side Limited — usually one or two sliding panels Up to four or more, depending on opening
Typical opening span Often up to around 3.0m Wider openings where a larger clear passage is wanted
Frame profile Standard residential profile Heavier profile, engineered for larger glass areas
Glass specification Toughened or laminated safety glass Laminated and/or thicker glass often specified
Hardware — coastal exposure Standard rollers; stainless upgrade available Stainless rollers and marine-grade components typically specified
Typical application Single patio door, standard living rooms Wide entertainment openings, larger glass areas
Considerations Straightforward fit in standard openings Opening size, wind exposure and structural support matter more

Which system is appropriate is determined during the site measure. The table above outlines common differences — not a universal specification for every job. Frame depth, glass thickness, hardware material and finish are confirmed per opening.

Common sliding door layouts.

Sliding doors are built in fixed panel arrangements. The layout that suits your opening depends on how wide it is and where you want the clear passage.

OX
Two-Panel

OX

One fixed panel, one sliding panel. Common for narrower patio openings where a single clear passage is needed.

XX
Two-Panel

XX

Both panels slide — one in each direction. Useful when the clear opening should sit centrally in the aperture.

XXX
Three-Panel

OXX

One fixed panel, two sliding panels. A middle option for medium-width openings where more glass area is wanted.

OXXO
Four-Panel

OXXO

Two fixed outer panels, two central sliders. Often used for wider patios where a generous central opening is wanted.

The configuration is confirmed during the site measure. Not every layout suits every opening — frame size, glass weight and structural support all affect what is practical.

Safety glazing and coastal durability.

Two considerations that matter more in Port Shepstone than almost anywhere else in KZN.

SANS 10400-N Glazing

This is the section of the National Building Regulations that governs glazing safety. Safety glazing is required in defined areas — including doors, sidelights and glazing within 500mm of the floor. The glass type and thickness depend on the pane size and its location. We specify glazing to meet these requirements for the actual opening.

Marine exposure

Beachfront and near-coastal properties see constant salt spray and high humidity. Hardware selection, drainage weeps and frame finishes are adjusted for exposure — stainless or marine-grade components where needed. For sea-facing openings, glass thickness and frame profile may also be upgraded to suit wind exposure.

Installation practice

Correct installation affects performance as much as the product itself. Setting blocks, drainage, expansion gaps and weather sealing all matter — especially where driving rain is common. Our installers work to standard industry practice for aluminium door installation in residential settings, with the specification confirmed in the written quote.

The standard process for every job.

What is included in a Bluminium sliding door order, and what is specified per project.

Options such as stainless hardware, coastal-grade finish upgrades, double glazing or thicker glass are specified per project — they are not included in every job by default. The quote lists what is included for your specific opening.

From Durban fabrication to South Coast installation.

The same process whether it is one door or a larger opening.

01 / Measure

Site Measure

We visit the property on the South Coast, measure the opening and note floor levels, lintel condition, exposure and access. This determines what can be fitted.

02 / Quote

Written Quote

An itemised quote covering the system, glass, finish and installation. Coastal-grade hardware options are listed so you can see what is included.

03 / Fabricate

Fabrication in Durban

Frames are cut, welded, glazed and finished in our Durban facility. This keeps fabrication quality-controlled and consistent — not outsourced to a third party.

04 / Install

Installation on the South Coast

Our teams install, align and seal the door on site. Most standard residential installations are completed in a single day, with coastal weather sealing confirmed before handover.

Port Shepstone and the Hibiscus Coast.

We fabricate in Durban and install across the KZN South Coast. Below is what we commonly encounter in each area.

Coastal exposure changes street by street on the South Coast. A beachfront property in Umtentweni has different requirements from an inland home in Port Shepstone CBD or a holiday unit in Shelly Beach. The notes below describe common patterns — they are not assumptions about every property. The site measure confirms what is actually needed.

Port Shepstone CBD & inland

Established residential and light-commercial

Mix of older homes, established residential streets and light-commercial properties. Retrofit measurement matters here — not every existing aperture suits a sliding door without adjustment. The site measure confirms what is feasible before any quote is issued.

Umtentweni & Sea Park

Sea-facing residential — direct marine exposure

Prime coastal residential zones with direct, unbroken marine exposure. Salt spray and wind-driven rain are the dominant environmental factors. Stainless hardware, coastal-grade finishes and drainage detailing matter more here than almost anywhere else on the page.

Shelly Beach & Oslo Beach

High-growth residential and holiday properties

A mix of permanent homes, holiday units and newer developments. Wide openings onto entertainment areas are common. Security hardware is often specified higher here, since many properties are not permanently occupied.

Sunwich Port

Quiet coastal residential

Smaller, quieter coastal pocket with a mix of permanent and holiday homes. Long-term durability and low-maintenance operation matter here — smooth rollers that do not bind during humid periods are a common consideration.

Buying considerations for the South Coast.

Questions that come up when specifying a sliding door for a coastal property.

Most residential sliding doors use either a surface-mount track or a recessed track. Recessed tracks sit flush with the floor for a cleaner look, while surface-mount tracks are simpler to fit and easier to retrofit. The track type is confirmed during the site measure, since floor construction and the existing opening often dictate which option is practical.

Salt spray, persistent humidity and wind-driven rain all affect aluminium doors. Powder-coated finishes, stainless or marine-grade hardware, and drainage weeps reduce the risk of corrosion, binding or water ingress. For exposed beachfront properties, hardware is typically upgraded to stainless components and the frame finish is specified to a higher corrosion-resistance standard than standard inland specifications.

In many cases, yes — provided the structural lintel and side walls can carry the load. During the free site measure, the existing opening, track bed and floor levels are checked. A recessed or surface-mount track solution is recommended based on the actual aperture. Some openings require building work; this is identified during measurement, before any quote is issued.

Safety glazing is a legal requirement in defined areas under SANS 10400 Part N — including doors, sidelights and glazing within 500mm of the floor. Toughened safety glass is commonly specified for sliding door panels. Laminated safety glass is often chosen where an extra security layer or improved acoustic performance is useful. For sea-facing openings, thicker glass may be specified to suit the wind exposure of the actual aperture.

After the site measure and written quote, fabrication typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on the system and finish. Installation of a standard residential sliding door is often completed in a single day. Larger multi-track systems or jobs that require building work may take longer. A firmer timeline is confirmed with the quote.

Aluminium sliding doors generally need little maintenance, but coastal properties benefit from a slightly more regular routine. Keeping the bottom track free of grit and salt helps the rollers run smoothly. A freshwater rinse every few months helps remove salt deposits. A periodic wipe-down with a damp cloth and mild detergent keeps the frames clean. Rollers and tracks may benefit from a silicone-based lubricant occasionally. The specific hardware fitted determines the exact routine.

Security depends on the specification. Sliding doors can be fitted with multi-point locking, anti-lift blocks and laminated or toughened safety glass. The frame profile and roller system also affect resistance to forced entry. For holiday properties or more exposed openings, the locking hardware and glass type can be upgraded. Security is discussed as part of the specification process, not assumed.
