Engineered for the KZN South Coast marine climate.

Scottburgh sits on the KZN South Coast with direct marine exposure, and the climate places specific demands on any aluminium door — salt spray carried on onshore winds, persistent humidity, and the wind-driven rain that comes with coastal summer storms. We fabricate Vistafold stacking door systems engineered for this exposure. Frame profiles are finished in 60–80 micron marine-grade architectural powder coating, hardware is Grade 316 stainless steel, and glass thickness is calculated per pane against a minimum 1500Pa wind-load for the specific elevation and height above grade. Our process starts with a site measure, then a written specification. Fabrication happens in our Durban facility; installation is handled on site by our own teams.

Discuss Your Opening

Stacking vs sliding — what changes.

Two different ways to open a wall. The choice is driven by how much of the wall you want to remove.

Parameter Sliding System Vistafold Folding-Stack System
Panel operation Slides on one or two tracks; panels overlap Hinged panels fold back into a compact stack
Clear opening Usually about half the span Entire span can be opened
Panels in the system Typically 2 to 4 Commonly 3 to 10
Maximum leaf width Commonly up to 2.4m per panel Commonly up to 900mm per leaf
Maximum system width Varies by system Up to 7.5m total
Maximum system height Varies by system Custom up to 3000mm
Hardware Rollers on bottom track (or top-hung) Grade 316 stainless steel double-bogey rollers; top and bottom rolling; hinges between panels
Stacking position Panels overlap in place Panels fold to one side or both sides
Weather sealing Double-draft seals on perimeter Perimeter seals plus inter-panel seals; dual EPDM gaskets; drainage detailing matters more
Security Standard multi-point locking Five-point mortice locksets and double-action flush bolts typically specified
Typical application Single patio doors, standard openings Wide entertainment openings, wraparound corners

Which system is appropriate is determined during the site measure. The table above outlines common differences — not a universal specification for every job. Frame depth, glass thickness, hardware and finish are confirmed per opening, with wind-loading calculated for the specific elevation and height above grade.

Vistafold stacking door layouts.

Vistafold stacking doors are built in fixed panel counts. The layout that suits your opening depends on how wide it is, where the stack sits, and how you want traffic to move through it.

OXX
Three-Panel

3-Panel Fold-a-Side

All three panels fold to one side. Suits narrower patio openings where a full clear span is wanted.

XXXXX
Five-Panel

5-Panel Single-Stack

All five panels fold to one side. Suits wider openings where one end of the wall is the natural stack position.

XXXXXXX
Seven-Panel

7-Panel Split-Stack

Seven panels folding to both ends of a wide span. Often specified where the wall being opened is particularly wide.

XXXXXXXXXX
Ten-Panel

10-Panel Expansive Span

Up to 7.5m total width. Specified for the largest architectural openings where a full wall needs to disappear.

The configuration is confirmed during the site measure. Not every layout suits every opening — panel count, glass weight and hardware selection all affect what is practical. Corner configurations are designed separately.

Safety glazing and marine exposure.

Two considerations that matter on the KZN South Coast more than inland.

SANS 10400-N Glazing & 1500Pa Wind Load

This is the section of the National Building Regulations that governs glazing safety. Safety glazing is required in defined areas — including doors, sidelights and glazing within 500mm of the floor. Standard laminated safety glass of 6.38mm thickness is commonly specified for coastal stacking door panels, with thicker laminated or toughened units available where the exposure or acoustic requirement warrants it. For sea-facing elevations, glass thickness and frame profile are calculated per pane against a minimum 1500Pa wind-load for the height above grade.

Marine exposure & corrosion protection

Scottburgh sits on the lower South Coast with direct marine exposure. Salt spray, humidity and wind-driven rain all affect the door over time. Marine-grade architectural powder coating of 60–80 micron thickness is used on the frame finish to resist salt-air corrosion. Track drainage channels, dual EPDM weather gaskets and Grade 316 stainless steel double-bogey rollers are commonly specified for near-coastal properties. Grade 316 is specified rather than the more common Grade 304 specifically because it resists chloride pitting under continuous salt exposure.

Installation practice

Correct installation affects performance as much as the product itself — particularly on stacking doors, where every panel must align with the one before it. Setting blocks, drainage, expansion gaps and weather sealing all matter. Our installers work to standard industry practice for aluminium door installation in residential settings, with the specification confirmed in the written quote. Compliance documentation is available on handover where required.

The standard process for every job.

What is included in a Bluminium Vistafold stacking door order, and what is specified per project.

Options such as soft-close hardware, thicker laminated glass, double glazing up to 24mm, recessed tracks or marine-grade hardware upgrades are specified per project — they are not included in every job by default. The quote lists what is included for your specific opening.

The same process whether it is a 3-panel patio door or a 10-panel architectural span.

01 / Measure

Site Measure

We visit the property, measure the full opening and note the orientation, height above grade and exposure. This determines the panel count, stack position and hardware type.

02 / Quote

Written Quote

An itemised quote covering panel count, glass, finish and installation. Coastal-grade options are listed so you can see what is included.

03 / Fabricate

Fabrication in Durban

Vistafold panels are cut, welded, glazed and finished in our Durban facility. This keeps fabrication quality-controlled and consistent — not outsourced to a third party.

04 / Install

Installation in Scottburgh

Our teams fit, align and test every panel in the stack on site. Stacking systems require precise panel-to-panel alignment, which is confirmed before handover.

Scottburgh and the lower South Coast.

We fabricate in Durban and install across Scottburgh and the surrounding lower South Coast communities. Below is what we commonly encounter in each area.

Coastal exposure changes across the Scottburgh node. A zero-line beachfront property in Bazley Beach has different requirements from a sheltered home in Scottburgh Central or an estate property in Pennington. The notes below describe common patterns — they are not assumptions about every property. The site measure confirms what is actually needed.

Scottburgh Central

Retrofits, structural lintels and non-standard apertures

Scottburgh Central is the hub for high-volume residential retrofits and light commercial storefront conversions. Many existing openings are non-standard in size, and older properties frequently still carry timber or steel frames that need extraction before a Vistafold system can be fitted. Structural lintel conditions are inspected during the site measure, and custom sizing is fabricated to suit the actual aperture rather than a stock size.

Pennington

Premium coastal properties and seamless floor transitions

Pennington is characterised by premium coastal residential properties and estate properties with expansive open-plan layouts facing the ocean. Wider openings of 5 to 7 panels — and custom 8+ panel installations — are common here. Recessed track installations are frequently specified to keep the internal and external floor planes flush, so the transition between living area and patio remains seamless. Marine-grade powder coating and stainless hardware are standard for the exposure.

Park Rynie & Sezela

High-security hardware for holiday and part-time occupancy

Park Rynie and Sezela contain a higher concentration of older holiday bungalows and properties that stand empty for extended periods. Security hardware is typically upgraded for these installations — five-point mortice locksets and double-action flush bolts on the leading panels, with laminated safety glass specified for the low-level panes. The combination of part-time occupancy and industrial-side exposure drives a higher specification than a permanently occupied home.

Bazley Beach & Ifafa Beach

Zero-line beachfront — maximum corrosion defence

Bazley Beach and Ifafa Beach contain zero-line beachfront properties exposed to the most intense salt spray and wind-driven coastal rain along this section of the coast. Frame finishes are specified to the higher end of the 60–80 micron marine-grade powder coating range. Dual EPDM rubber gaskets are fitted at the perimeter and between panels. Grade 316 stainless steel is used throughout the hardware. Wind-load calculations are performed per elevation against a minimum 1500Pa rating.

Questions that come up when specifying a stacking door on the lower South Coast.

Vistafold stacking door systems are fabricated in configurations from 3 panels up to 10 panels, with total system widths reaching up to 7.5 metres and heights custom up to 3000mm. Maximum leaf width is typically around 900mm. The practical panel count depends on the opening width and how much clear glass area is wanted — 3 and 5-panel configurations are common for standard patio openings, while 7 to 10-panel systems are typically specified for wider architectural spans opening onto a view. Corner configurations are available and use a corner post assembly that allows panels from two sides to fold and stack independently. The panel count, stack position and corner arrangement are confirmed during the site measure.

The key difference is how much of the wall can be opened. A sliding door runs on one or two tracks and overlaps panels — the clear opening is usually limited to about half the total span, and some of the wall stays glazed when the door is open. A stacking door folds panels back on hinged joints into a compact stack at one or both ends, so the entire span can be opened. That makes stacking systems the better choice where the goal is to remove the wall between interior and exterior rather than simply provide a passage. Sliding systems remain a good option where the opening is narrower or where a lower budget is the priority.

Aluminium stacking doors generally need very little maintenance, though coastal properties benefit from a slightly more regular routine. A freshwater rinse every few months helps remove salt deposits. Keeping the bottom track free of grit and salt prevents binding. A periodic wipe-down with a damp cloth and mild detergent keeps frames clean. Silicone-based lubricant on rollers and hinges helps with smooth operation. Checking the perimeter and inter-panel seals once a year keeps water and draughts out. The specific hardware fitted determines the exact routine.

Safety glazing is a legal requirement in defined areas under SANS 10400 Part N — including doors, sidelights and glazing within 500mm of the floor. Standard laminated safety glass of 6.38mm thickness is commonly specified for coastal stacking door panels, with thicker laminated or toughened units available where the exposure or acoustic requirement warrants it. Double glazing can be specified up to 24mm total thickness for thermal insulation or acoustic control. Glass thickness is calculated per pane against wind-loading for the specific elevation and height above grade.

After the site measure and written quote, fabrication typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on the system, panel count and finish. Stacking systems with more panels or corner configurations may take longer. Installation of a standard residential stacking door is often completed in a single day. A firmer timeline is confirmed with the quote.
